Instead of venting the gases out of a simple hole in the surface of the burner, the Fire Pit Burners are looped out of metal nozzles resembling pressure-washer tips. The burner is where fuel is ignited, producing golden-orange flames that are beautiful for lighting up the evening.
Gas seeps through the glass/lava rocks into the flame, and is only ignited when it reaches out the top, therefore, it is placed at least 1- 1/4 inches above the burner, rather than beside it as with a gas stove burner. The gas finding its way upwards on its own through the fire pit media, creating a larger, more natural looking, irregular flame signature. 
The standard style of flamers must be buried below at least 1-2 inches of sandstone fire glass or smaller size (between 1/4 and 1/2") lava rocks. When it comes to dimensions, try and keep a minimum of three inches between the burners edges and the exterior of your fire pit.
