How do weathering steel fire pits work?
Corrosion-resistant steel is unlike other corrosion-resistant steels in that it resists rust. Corten steel will rust, but only on the outer surface. Once the outer layer of rust forms, it will not penetrate into the weathering steel. The anti-rust layer on the surface acts as a barrier to prevent further corrosion of the steel. In regular carbon steel, the layer of rust that forms is porous and will slough off, allowing another layer to form deeper in the steel.
